Algerian state-run energy company Sonatrach will be able to export an additional 20 million cubic metres per day of gas to meet urgent demand during the winter, its CEO said .

The additional volumes will be from captured flared gas. Hassi Messaoud, the country’s largest oilfield, produces 60 million cubic metres per day of associated gas.

“We need to make sure we are ready to meet our clients’ urgent demands during winter,” Sonatrach’s CEO Abdelmoumene Ould Kaddour told reporters.

Sonatrach had previously said it had been unable to meet an urgent demand for gas from French company Engie during the 2016 winter.

Algeria’s gas exports are expected to be 54 billion cubic metres in 2017, compared with 57 billion in 2016, Sonatrach has said.
