During its fourth meeting in 2018, the Permanent Committee for Economic Development of the Ajman Executive Council, headed by Abdullah Al Muwajai, Chairman of the Committee, presented the progress of its work and its latest developments.
Al Muwajai praised the committee’s role in raising and discussing issues related to the economic and tourism sectors, with the aim of promoting the growth and sustainability of local institutions, companies and factories, while highlighting the importance of the committee’s outcomes and recommendations, which were submitted directly to the Executive Council and will be presented to decision-makers in the emirate. The Ajman Tourism Development Department presented a statistical report on the performance of local tourism establishments in 2016 and 2017, which highlighted a growth in the tourism sector between 2016 and 2017, when local tourism establishments recorded overall earnings of over AED450 million, an increase of 11.7 percent while the number of hotel guests reached over 544,000. In 2017, the number of hotels in the emirate was 39 and the number of rooms was 3,657, an increase of nine percent compared to 2016. The number of visitors to the Ajman Museum also increased to 31,000, a rise of 23 percent compared to 2016. During the meeting, the participants reviewed a report on the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department’s accelerators and related construction, as well as on its efforts to accelerate the progress of many local projects, such as plans for buildings and properties and digital transformation. The meeting also discussed a comprehensive urban planning project and a study on Ajman’s roads and transportation sector for 2030, that included key comprehensive urban plans and the development of the Ajman Transport Plan 2030. The meeting’s participants stressed the need to organise events that will promote sports tourism, to help develop the local tourism sector. The participants also witnessed a presentation about the role of entertainment parks and destinations in promoting tourism, influencing the real estate sector, and attracting more visitors to the emirate. Related statistics show that tourism and travel contributed over 12 percent of the UAE's GDP in 2016 while tourism investments in the country totalled AED26.2 billion, which is equivalent to seven percent of the total investments in the country during that year. |
