Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the caretaker government Ayman Safad , discussed with Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Coveney, means to boost bilateral ties as well as regional developments.
The two ministers pointed to the broad prospects for enhancing cooperation in economic and trade fields and agreed to find institutional frameworks through which specialists will discuss cooperation and exchange of experiences in the fields of agriculture, education and information technology, trade and investment.. The two ministers also reviewed regional developments, mainly the Palestinian issue and the Syrian crisis.. Safadi and Coveney stressed the need for concerted efforts to break the deadlock in the peace efforts and start a real and effective effort to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution and in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.. Safadi thanked Ireland for its historic and principled positions in supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, especially their rights to freedom and the state. He also praised Ireland's position on Jerusalem. The two ministers also reviewed the current situation in the Gaza Strip and called for lifting the Israeli blockade and allow the entry of aid to the coastal enclave. They also agreed on the need to continue support to the UNRWA.. The Irish minister, who is visiting Jordan for the first time as his country's foreign minister, affirmed that Ireland will continue to support efforts to resolve the conflict, noting that Ireland looks forward to further cooperation, coordination and consultation with the Kingdom to achieve this objective. Safadi briefed the Irish minister on the burden borne by Jordan as a result of hosting 1.3 million Syrian refugees, ten percent of whom live in refugee camps.. The Irish minister praised the humanitarian role played by Jordan to host Syrian refugees and urged the international community to continue its support to the refugees.. Earlier, the Irish minister visited the Zaatri refugee camp for Syrian refugees in the Mafraq Governorate and praised the high level of services offer by Jordan to the refugees. |
