Egypt's Investment Minister Sahar Nasr and Bangladesh's Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen have co-chaired a key UN debate session on available opportunities for cooperation among countries of the South.
The session was held on the sidelines of the UN's Second High-Level Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40), currently held in Buenos Aires in Argentina, the investment ministry said in a statement . The gathering was attended by Dongyu Qu, Chinese Minister for Agriculture, Jorge Moreira da Silva, Director of the Development Cooperation Directorate at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and Cornelia Richter, Vice President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), as well as representatives of UN organizations concerned with poverty reduction, development and combating terrorism, the statement added. Since the launch of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA+40), countries of the global South have made a progress towards fostering cooperation and sharing experience, the statement quoted Nasr as saying. Also, Nasr called for pushing forward cooperation, based on shared values and mutual interests, adding that the exchange of development expertise through South-South and North-South cooperation could strengthen Southern countries' capacities, increase growth rates, and encourage development partners to join their initiatives, in addition to providing new chances for cooperation. There is clear evidence that cooperation among Southern countries contributes to expediting progress on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Nasr said, asserting the importance of establishing a South-South knowledge and innovation center. |
