Foreign Trade Up By US$313 Million in Jan-Feb 2019

The trade balance increased by US$313 million in the first two months of the current year, compared to a trade deficit worth US$671 million in the same period in 2018, the General Customs Directorate (DGD) told APS.

Algeria’s exports hiked to US$7.635 billion in January and February of the current year, compared to US$6.870 billion in the same period of 2018, up by 11.14% (US$765 million), according to provisional data released by the Customs’ Studies and Foresight Department (DEPD).

Imports fell from US$7.541 billion to US$7.322 billion, down by US$219 million (-2.90%).

Exports covered 104% of imports in the first two months of 2019, compared with 91% in the same period of the previous year.

Hydrocarbons accounted for the bulk of Algerian foreign sales in January and February 2019 (93.77% of the total export volume), reaching US$7.159 billion compared with US$6.405 billion in January and February 2018, up by US$754 million (+11.77%).

As regards non-hydrocarbon exports, they remained marginal, with US$476 million (6.23% of the total volume of exports), up by 2.35%, compared to the same period in 2018.

Non-hydrocarbon exports consisted of semi-finished products with US$364 million (compared to US$356 million), food goods with US$67 million (against US$55 million) and capital goods industrial with US$23 million (against US$16 million), i.e. stagnation by compared to the same period of comparison.

Concerning imports, three product groups out of seven, declined during the first two months of 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year.

Indeed, the import invoice of the energy and lubricants group (fuels) fell by 75.41% to US$96 million, compared to US$390 million in 2018.

Food goods, whose imports hit US$1.337 billion against US$1.489 billion, decreased by 10.21%. Semi-finished products also fell to US$1.802 billion, compared to US$1.897 billion (or -5.05%).
