Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Tareq Hammouri, said Jordan and Iraq have made "great strides" in enhancing bilateral relations, which were reflected in the recent Royal visit to Baghdad and mutual high-level official exchanges.
In this context, Hammori said the two sides announced memoranda of understanding (MoU) and key vital projects, during the meeting of the two countries' prime ministers at the Karama-Trebil crossing. The minister made the remarks at a discussion session of the Jordan Strategies Forum held today under the patronage of Capital Bank, adding these MoUs aim to enhance the Jordanian-Iraqi ties, which will have a "positive" impact on the two sides, citing the major steps seeking to increase border trade movement, to slash handling fees at the Aqaba port, and to facilitate visa obtainment. Citing Iraq's restrictions on the exports origin certificates, and quality control measures, the minister announced the Jordanian exports to Iraq during the first five months of 2019 were "lower," compared to the same period 2018. On ways to enhance Jordan's trade with its eastern neighbor, the minister said:"There are many Jordanian products that can compete in the Iraqi market," adding the government is working with Bagdad to promote exporting these "competitive" products to increase the total volume of Jordanian exports to the Iraqi market. |
