Tunisia’s foreign currency reserves rose to 19.8 billion dinars, the equivalent of 114 days of imports, official data showed , boosted by growth of the tourism sector and remittances from Tunisians abroad.
It was the first time since October 2016, that reserves had reached that level. Tunisia’s foreign exchange reserves were 14.1 billion dinars a year ago, equal to only 83 days of imports, the central bank said. Tourism revenues grew by 35 pct last year to reach about 6 billion dinars ($2.13 billion) with 9.4 million visitors for the first time. In the first month this year tourism revenues were about 400 million dinars. Remittances of Tunisians abroad also increased to reach 422 million dinars, compared with 367 million dinars in the same period last year. ($1 = 2.8212 Tunisian dinars) |
