Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli directed the government to set up a national strategy for climate change.
Chairing a meeting of the Supreme Committee of the National Council for Climate Change (NCCC) the premier also instructed the bodies concerned to present the general framework of the required strategy at the committee's next meeting. The ministers of water resources and irrigation, planning and economic development, finance, local development, environment, agriculture and land reclamation attended the meeting, along with a host of senior officials from the authorities concerned. Briefing the premier on the national and international climate change situations as well as Egypt's efforts to address the negative impacts of the global phenomenon, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad highlighted the unprecedented threats of climate change, such as the emergence of new diseases, drought waves and a decrease in biodiversity. These threats have obliged the international community to unite and take immediate action so that every country will fulfill its obligations in this respect, the minister added. Fouad also touched upon some international climate change initiatives, including the European Green Deal, which aims to transition to a low greenhouse gas economy, and China's pledge to be carbon neutral by 2060. Fouad added that the NCCC's executive office recommended to integrate climate change dimensions into all national policies through a national climate change strategy, in line with Egypt's Sustainable Development Strategy (Egypt Vision 2030), the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction, Egypt's Low Emissions Development Strategy and the Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy to 2035. |
