Ministry of Electricity and Energy started the implementation of the largest project for establishment of a wind farm to produce electricity in Gabal-el-Zeit on the Red Sea Coast with a total capacity of 200 megawatts. The project's cost reaches EGP 3 billion pounds. The project aims to add nearly 741 megawatt hours per year to the national grid of electricity by 2014. It provides 160 thousand tons of oil equivalent annually, and reduces 400 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions to maintain environment against pollution.
Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Hassan Younis said that this project comes within the framework of the electricity sector's policy to diversify sources of energy production, especially from renewable sources of sun and water in order to meet requirements of the development and provide electricity necessary for all purposes of development in Egypt.
