Around 15 Spanish companies have decided to open branches in Oman as one is currently engaged in establishing a factory for kitchenware in Samayil Industrial Estate, along with other companies specialising in the technology for trains, airports, railways and training in various areas.
This was revealed as Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry, received yesterday Jaime García-Legaz, Spanish Secretary of State for Trade, Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, who is currently visiting the Sultanate. The two sides discussed development of trade and economic ties between the Sultanate and Spain and ways to increase trade and investment between the two countries. The Sultanate is one of the largest sources of gas to Spain while there are a number of Omani investments in energy sector in Spain, in addition to Spanish firms which have obtained exploration concessions for oil and gas in the Governorate of Musandam. Regarding development of small and medium-sized enterprises, a group of young Omanis have been sent to Spain last year to get acquainted with Spanish experience in restaurant management and food packaging industry. The Spanish side expressed its keenness to continue to support the programme, while preparations are under way to send another group of entrepreneurs from the field of energy and green projects to Spain. The meeting was attended from the Omani side by Ahmed bin Sulaiman al Maimani, Under-Secretary for Administration and Financial Affairs and Regions Affairs and the minister’s advisers on trade and economic affairs; while from the Spanish Deputy Director of Trade policy with the Mediterranean countries, Africa, the Middle East at the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, Juan Jose, Ambassador of Spain to the Sultanate and Sergio Valle, Director of the Economic and Trade Office at the Spanish Embassy attended. |
