President Abdel Fattah El Sisi asserted the need to protect low-income brackets and needy people from the effects of economic reforms, calling for intensifying control on prices and a much more effective role by the consumer protection and control bodies to ensure quality and quantity of foods and medications on the market.
The president's assertion came during a meeting with Prime Minister Sherif Ismail in the presence of the ministers of international cooperation, trade and industry and investment. Sisi was briefed at the start of the meeting on the conditions of supplies of basic commodities in the markets at affordable prices and enough quantities through measures including fixed and mobile outlets in the areas of needy people in Upper Egypt and the Delta in cooperation and coordination with all concerned bodies, said presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef. They mulled ways to encourage micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in light of their importance for the national economy as they are easy to spread in a way that boosts efforts of comprehensive and sustainable development that are meant to establish integrated developmental and urban communities in addition to the jobs they create particularly for youth. The meeting probed different options to set up an entity for promoting these enterprises as Sisi called for expanding them and a total of Egp200 billion has been allocated for them over four years at soft interest. The trade and industry minister reviewed a proposal for establishing a body for SMEs to be affiliated to the ministry of trade and industry. The proposed body is meant to develop programs and initiatives in this regard, said the minister. It will also set out rules and regulations that are required to coordinate with other concerned bodies in this sector. The body will also ease measures of ushering SMEs, including issuing licences along with providing finance for them in coordination with the Social Fund for Development (SFD), said the minister. The president ordered fast steps to be taken to establish the body by October2016 to push forward SMEs, underling the importance of coordinating efforts of allbodies concerned and revising regulations in order to offer necessary incentives for those who run SMEs, said the spokesman. Later, Petroleum Minister Tareq Mullah joined the meeting. The trade and industry minister presented a plan to develop a total area of 9,000 square meters between Qena, Safaga and Qoseir cities. The area has huge mining potentials, including gold, phosphate, copper, granite and zinc in addition to tourist and environmental potentials, said the minister. The President ordered a review of the study on the Golden Triangle area by the ministries concerned. The timetable for the plan was ordered by the president to be shortened. |
