Aswan celebrates on 21/10/2014 the phenomenon of the sun rays falling perpendicularly on the face of King Ramsis II statue at Abu Simbel Temple. The governor and a number of officials from the ministries of culture and tourism and a number of ambassadors will be attending the event.
The phenomenon, which will take place on 22/10/2014, is a unique engineering and astronomical miracle that happens only in Egypt and can never be found anywhere else on earth, Governor Mustafa Yousri said on 20/10/2014. The celebration marks the beginning of a new tourist season in the governorate, he said. It is believed that the axis of Abu Simbel temple was positioned by the ancient Egyptian architects in such a way that on October 22 and February 22 each year, the rays of the sun would penetrate the inner most chamber and illuminate the sculptures on the back wall, except for the statue of Ptah, the god connected with the underworld, who always remained in the dark. These dates mark the Pharaonic king's birthday and coronation day respectively. |
